Kiriska: So @anniestoll recently had an informal Twitter poll that I thought was very insightful.
The “how much should I bring of an item” question is oft-asked by Alley newcomers and I always say “better to sell out than be stuck with stock forever.” If seasoned artists typically sell fewer than 25 of their tested and known best-selling print, you probably don’t need to print that many on your first run of anything.
This is something I wish I knew at my first con back in 2005, AX where I shared small portion of a table. Nothing sold. I made the same mistake a year later at Fanimecon when I had my first solo table. Drew six illustrations, printed 40 each, and had leftovers that never sold for years. Ended up giving them away and using them for wrapping paper!
I’ve also had this issue.
I have 25 of small prints that are never going to move.Anything smaller than 8x10 don’t get more than 10 of
anything 8x10 or bigger bring 5 or less.
Deals like 3 smalls for 12 (instead of the 15 it would be) it encourages people to get more.
And expect to not sell prints. You may sell a few, but it’ll be the three people that MUST HAVE it. Everyone else just won’t spend the money.
